Breaking Blasters: 2018 Panini Prizm

Breaking Blasters: 2018 Panini Prizm

So as with many other things, my timing is terrible. I got a bunch of football blasters a few months ago to see what this year had to offer and I just never got around to opening them. Then it took me forever to get to the point of putting together a post. At least it’s still technically football season. It might be the POSTseason, but at least it’s not the OFFseason.

I’m going to post these in my order of preference and I’ll start with Panini Prizm. It’s not really my bag in general and I know this from the Panini Prizm baseball packs that act as fillers in the repack boxes that I open for baseball. But I figured I would give it a shot just to see what was up with it.

Here’s the first of a few football Breaking Blasters posts to close out the season (hopefully before the Super Bowl).

If you’re interested here are some other recent Breaking Blasters for football: 2018 Rookies & Stars, 2018 Absolute, 2018 Donruss Football, 2018 Prestige, 2018 Score.

Pop It Like Its Hot

I’m not a fan of the “Prizm” effect in general. I knew that going in. I don’t like how it looks like everything is wrapped in plastic. It almost has this effect I remember from an old version of Photoshop (very old version at that). I don’t even like how these cards feel in my hand

But what I will say is the design is pretty sharp. While the effect is over the top, the design underneath isn’t. Those players really POP off te card with the way the colors are for the foreground and the background. So while it’s not my thing, it’s not the worst I’ve seen.

Giant Jersey

The standard rookie I got was a bit of a dud. Not that I’m a Redskins fan, but I don’t even remember that Simmie Cobbs dude at all. I’m not saying that Kyle Lauletta showed anything other than being good at running from cops (or maybe he wasn’t good at that either). But if I’m going to open a pack that I might not like, at least I get something Giants-related.

The one thing I’ll give Panini credit for is their inserts. For the most part I like their inserts. But what I really like (and you’ll see my comments in later posts) is how they do landscape inserts. The Tom Brady Hype card is seriously good. Plus it has the refractor action going on too. Definitely digging that.

Disco Stu

Finally we have the parallels. These are the Disco parallels and I think they might be exclusive to blasters. I don’t like it when there are parallels that are exclusive to the packs you open, but what can you do. They are definitely interesting and these appear to be very Ravens focused.

This first football blasters was definitely my least favorite and it was the least amount of cards. That meant it was a lot of base and not a lot of interesting parallels and inserts. I can guarantee that will change with the what’s in the next blasters moving forward.
