The Story of the Autograph

Mark Eichhorn is a former relief pitcher who played in the majors for 11 years. He pitched in 1982 and then made it back to the majors in 1986 to pitch until 1996. He played for the Blue Jays, Braves, Angels, and Orioles.

Eichhorn was drafted by the Blue Jays in the second round of the 1979 MLB Draft. He made it to the majors during the 1982 season, debuting on August 30th. He started seven games but lost all three and had a 5.45 ERA. After a severe shoulder injury, he went back down to the minors and didn’t make it back to the big leagues until 1986.

But 1986 was a banner year for Eichhorn. He pitched 157 innings (a career high) and appeared in 69 games, finishing 38 and collecting 10 saves along the way. But here’s the best part… he went 14-6 wit a 1.72 ERA and 166 strikeouts. He was so good that he finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting but also sixth in the Cy Young award voting. He would have a pretty good year in 1987 too. Because of that shoulder injury he lost velocity but he developed a pretty crazy sidearm delivery that probably helped and surprised a lot of hitters.

Eichhorn moved around a lot after 1988, but he came back to Toronto and helped them in the bullpen for their World Series campaigns in 1992 and 1993 with a 0.00 ERA for his postseason career. It was only 4.1 innings, but he got the job done that he was asked to do.

Mark has always been someone who like to put a lot on his cards. He signs (obvi) which that alone has some size, plus he puts his number and he puts a bible verse on there. The only problem with that sometimes is that it’s a lot to put on a card and it can get buried with a busier card. These are pretty good though and replaced some lesser quality cards I had.

Thanks Mr. Eichhorn! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
