The Story of the Autograph
Raghib “Rocket” Ismail is a former wide receiver in the Canadian and National Football Leagues. He played from 1991 to 2001 with the Toronto Argonauts, Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders, Carolina Panthers, and Dallas Cowboys.
Ismail was born in New Jersey and raised in Pennsylvania. He went on to a tremendous college career at Notre Dame. While he was there the Irish won a National Championship in 1988 and then second in 1989. In 1990 he finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy to Ty Detmer. He was also a track star for the Irish as well.
He started his professional football career in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts when he got a record contract at the time to play there. But he was chosen in the NFL Draft in 1991 by the Raiders with the 100th overall pick too. With the Argonauts he won a Grey Cup in his first year and was the Grey Cup MVP. Disappointed with playing in Canada he signed with the Raiders to play the 1993 season.
With Carolina in 1998 he broke 1000 yards receiving for the first time and hit career high for touchdowns. He moved on to the Cowboys when they outbid other teams for him and Michael Irvin had a career-ending injury and he went over 1000 yards again with a career high 1097 yards receiving. He tore his ACL in 2000 then his MCL in 2001. A neck injury in 2002 put him on injured reserve and he retired in February of 2003.
Ismail’s brother Qadry also played in the NFL.

I love Rocket’s signature for so many reasons. First the “R” is huge and the way it circles him on this card is pretty cool. And then I love how he signs “Rocket” and his number. But I think what helps make this one is the card itself. It’s just great to have him in a Notre Dame uniform because even though he played professionally, I think of him playing for the Irish.
