The Story of the Autograph

Given that this is the third of the Mariota covers I’ve had signed, I’m focus on his college career since I already focused on his high school and professional exploits.

Marcus wasn’t a well known player in high school because he never started a game until his senior season. He attended the Oregon football camp in 2010 and Mark Helfrich, the offensive coordinator at the time, got to watch him at the camp. He later visited Marcus in Hawai and called Chip Kelly during the visit. They offered him a scholarship before he even start a varsity game. When his senior season of high school was finished he was the number two prospect in the state and the number 12 dual-threat QB in the nation. He was recruited by several schools but only offered scholarships by Memphis and Oregon.

He redshirted his first year (2011) and then came in as the first freshman to start a season opener for the at QB for the Ducks in 22 seasons. He would lead the team to a 12-1 record and a the Ducks would be number two in the nation. They would win the Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State 35-17 and Marcus was the Offensive MVP for the game. On top of that he was the Pac 12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year and first team All-Conference for the league too.

His second season would be successful as well as Oregon would go 12-2. They would lose to Arizona and Stanford and play in the Alamo Bowl against Texas where they won 30-7. Again he was named the Offensive MVP of the bowl game. But Marcus’ season wasn’t without struggles. He injured his MCL in October and played through it for the remainder of the season. He was a favorite to win the Heisman before the loss to Stanford.

He came back for his junior season and was the favorite to win the Heisman as well as a ton of other awards for offensive players and quarterbacks. The Ducks went 12-1 on the season and played in the Rose Bowl. This would be a semifinal for the College Football Playoff against Florida State and Jameis Winston (who he would be up against as the top QB in the draft too). Mariota was named Offensivn the 59-20 victory. Unfortunately they would lose in the final to Ohio State.

Mariota finished his career with a 36-5 record overall. He threw for almost 11,000 yards and had 105 TDs to only 14 interceptions. In addition to that he rushed for over 700 yards each season to have over 2,200 yards for his career and 29 rushing touchdowns.

The Score on Marcus Mariota – 8.0

This is my third success for Marcus this year (check out the first and the second). I’ve like all three but the two Oregon Ducks covers are the best. Just the color of the covers take the autographs well. He always signs nice and large on these magazines and uses a good marker. What would have really put this one up a notch is if he signed a little lower. I still like it, but just a little lower and it would be even easier to see. That’s really nitpicking though.

Thanks Mr. Mariota! Another awesome return an 8.
