The Story of the Autograph

Larry Nance is a former power forward in the NBA. He played from 1981 through 1994 with the Phoenix Suns and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Nance was born and raised in South Carolina and played for Clemson in college. He helped the Tigers make it to the Elite Eight in his junior year. In 1981 he was drafted in the first round of the NBA draft with the 20th overall pick by the Phoenix Suns.

Nance was a great player and was a three-time All-Star (1985, 1989, 1993), an NBA All-Defensive First Team member (1989), and a two-time NBA All-Defensive Second-Team member (1992, 1993). But he might be most notable for being the first winner of the NBA Slam Dunk contest in 1984. He was also part of a huge trade for the Suns and Cavaliers. In 1988, the Suns traded Nance, another player, and a draft pick for Kevin Johnson, Mark West, Tyrone Corbin and picks that would include then Dan Majerle. He had continued his success with the Cavaliers and was back into the playoffs with them in almost every year he was on the team.

These days Larry is into Drag Racing. He has three kids and all of them played basketball with the most famous being Larry, Jr. who currently plays for the Cavaliers.

The Score on Larry Nance – 5.5

Larry is a sideways signer, much like Jim Leyland and Larry Walker. Again, the problem with these basketball cards is that they are so dark. Of course the Skybox is dark… it’s black actually. But the Topps card probably would have a better place to sign if he didn’t sign sideways.

Thanks Mr. Nance! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
