The Story of the Autograph

Larry Walker is a former outfielder and first baseman in the majors. His highly decorated career lasted from 1989 to 2005. During that time he played for the Montreal Expos, Colorado Rockies, and St. Louis Cardinals.

Walker was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada. He grew up playing  hockey and volleyball in high school because baseball wasn’t offered. He went on to junior hockey but was cut from two different teams so he focused on baseball and in 1984 was chosen to be on the Canadian Youth Championships where he was found by Expos scouts.

Canadians weren’t eligible for the MLB Draft at the time and he didn’t even rate as a prospect because he was so raw, but the Expos signed him. He had to get used to actual pitching in the minors as he had never seen most of the pitching he did from the guys there. But he made it through the minors to debut on August 16, 1989.

That was just the beginning of an amazing career that included so many accolades:

  • 1997 NL MVP with the Rockies
  • 1997 NL HR Leader
  • Batting Titles in 1998, 1999, and 2001
  • Five All-Star Nods
  • Seven Gold Gloves
  • Three Silver Slugger Awards

I’m kind of hoping to pick up other parts of Larry’s story if I get more returns in the future.

The Score on Larry Walker – 5.0

Larry always personalizes, puts in a message and then signs your card in a different direction as that text. I like Larry’s signature from what I’ve seen, but it just didn’t come out well on this card. Part of that is the light marker and part of it was probably the speed he signed and the card not taking the ink well. The personalization came out fine.

Thank Mr. Walker! I’m giving this return a 5.
