The Story of the Autograph

Dwight Douglas “D.D.” Lewis played linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL from 1968 through 1981. He had a great college career and played on some really great Dallas Cowboy teams.

D.D. went to college at Mississippi State  where he was a two-way player and starter for three years. He led the Bulldogs in tackles all three years and was team captain during his senior year. He was all-everything and was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 1967. Bear Bryant once said he was “the best linebacker in the country.” In 2001 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The Cowboys drafted D.D. with the 159th overall pick in the sixth round of the 1968 NFL Draft. How does a guys with that much success in college go so late in the draft… his size. Teams thought he was too small to play in the NFL. The Cowboys even tried him at center before making him an outside linebacker.

D.D. missed what would have been his second NFL season to military service. Then after being a back up for several years, he replace Chuck Howley as the weakside linebacker and he held that position for the next eight years. His best game was the 1975 NFC Championship Game when he intercepted two passes in the victory. He still holds the Cowboys record with 27 playoff games played. He made five Super Bowl appearances and won two of them.

During the 1982 season, D.D. famously quoted that “Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch His favorite team play.”

D.D. has a pretty nice autograph. I think the problem on this card is that the marker isn’t super strong and that makes it kind of hide within the business of what he signed the card. There his number behind it and it’s a little bit of a dark place on the card. Still I like his style. It always amazes me when guys like this sign so well. I’ve met some former lineman and their hand just seems like clubs when they get older. I don’t know how they hold a pen let alone sign.

Thanks Mr. Lewis! I’m giving this a 6.
