The Story of the Autograph

Mike Horan was a punter in the NFL from 1984 through 1999. He officially played with several teams: Eagles, Broncos, Giants Rams, and Bears. But that doesn’t even count the beginning of his career when he tried to make it on with a few teams before it was in the league. He’s best known for playing with the Broncos during their unsuccessful Super Bowl runs.

Mike went to Long Beach State after growing up in California and played there in 1980 and 1981 after transferring from Fullerton College. The Falcons selected him in the ninth round of the 1982 NFL Draft, but he never made the team. The next year he tried to make it with the Green Bay Packers, but he failed the physical. In the same year he tried out for the Bills as well and didn’t make it again. The Eagles had him for two years and then released him and he tried out for the Vikings.

In 1986 he finally made it through and got to the Broncos. Bill Parcells of the Giants actually was the person who told Dan Reeves that Horan could help them out after the Broncos had already used two punters and he appeared in the last four games. He stuck with the Broncos until they released him in 1993. While they lost a bunch of Super Bowls during that time, it was still a good time to be on a very successful Bronco team. In 1988, Horan made it to the Pro Bowl and was an All-Pro as well.

From there he spent a good amount of time with the Giants and then bounced around. His last game was a great one… winning the Super Bowl with the “Greatest Show on Turf” Rams.

Mike sure does write a lot on your card. And he really fills it up too. While I’m not always a fan of covering up the subject of the card. I can’t really get mad at it when the marker is great and it’s still big. The two Pro Set Platinum cards came out great but the Pacific card has a bit of a smudge. At first I thought that the little squiggle at the end was just him underlining his signature, but it’s actually “#2”.

Thanks Mr. Horan! These get a 5.5
