The Story of the Autograph

Sam Dyson is a right-handed relief pitcher currently with the San Francisco Giants. He’s been in the league since 2012 and has also played with the Blue Jays, Marlins and Rangers.

Dyson grew up in Tampa, FL and was selected by the Nationals in the 2006 MLB Draft. He chose to go to college instead of the majors though and went on to attend South Carolina. He posted an 8-0 record in 2008 and was drafted again in 2009 but he went back to school yet again. Good thing he did because he was able to experience winning a College World Series with the Gamecocks. Then the Blue Jays drafted him in the fourth round in 2010.

While coming through the minors he had Tommy John Surgery and missed the 2011 season. But after that recovery he was quick to get to the majors and debuted in July of 2012 for the Blue Jays. He moved on to the Marlins in 2013 when they claimed him off waivers. He picked up a lot more appearances with the Marlins than he had previously, but in 2015 he was traded to the Rangers. Later that year he pitched in the postseason and gave up a go-ahead three-run homer to Jose Bautista and the Jays beat the Rangers in that deciding Game 5.

Dyson seems to be a bit of a hot head maybe. I haven’t seen him play too much but that postseason he caused some bench clearing situations. That was preceeded in 2014 by an incident in which his teammate Chris Hatcher broke his jaw at a bar in Miami while in the minors.

He’s closing games in San Francisco now that Mark Melancon is out. His best season though was 2016 in Texas when he had 38 saves and a 2.43 ERA.

I was really surprised to get this one back so quickly. There are only a few guys that return cards in such a speedy fashion. I don’t know if that is normal for Sam though. He has a bit of a small signature, but it’s recognizable as his. I’m not a huge fan of the blue signature on a Giants card, but it does make it stick out better with that color.

Thanks Mr. Dyson! I’m giving this one a 6.
