The Story of the Autograph

John Castino played second base and third base for the Minnesota Twins from 1979 through 1984. He was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1979.

Castino was born and raised in Evanston, IL. He played his college ball at Rollins College in Florida. He was drafted by the Twins in the third round of the 1976 Draft. He made his major league debut in April of 1979. He played 148 games en route to his winning Rookie of the Year honors after putting up a .285 average, five homers, 52 RBI and five stolen bases. He actually won the award with Alfredo Griffin as they were tied in the voting.

He actually ad a great season in 1980, an even better season than his Rookie of the Year season in fact. He hit a career high .302, a career high 13 homers and a career high 64 RBI in 150 games. In 1982 he moved to second base and led all second basemen in fielding percentage. But back pain cut his career short and he played the final game of his career in May of 1984.

I went through a long stretch without having a ball point pen signed card and now lately I’ve seemed to get a little more of them. But I guess as you send out more the chances go up that you get one. Normally you don’t see a ball point pen smudge, but the ’84 Topps card did just that. Unfortunately that’s the on that he put the “79 AL ROY” inscription on. It’s also interesting that he puts his number on his signature because I don’t see a lot of older players doing that for baseball.

Thanks Mr. Castino! I’m giving this return a 4.
