The Story of the Autograph

Don Maynard played football in four different leagues, but he’s best know as a Jet from playing in the AFL. He also played with the New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals in the NFL, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL, and the Shreveport Steamers of the World Football League.

Maynard grew up in Texas, but his family moved around so much that you can’t really say much more than that. He attended 13 schools and as a senior went to Colorado City High School in Colorado City, TX. Collegiately, he played for Rice (in Houston) for a year and ten went to Texas Western which is now known as UTEP or the University of Texas at El Paso. In three years he caught only 28 passes but averaged 27.6 yards per catch with 10 touchdowns. He played as a running back, returned punts and kicks, and played as a defensive back.

After being drafted in the ninth round by the Giants in 1957 he played 12 games in his rookie season. He was cut during the next training camp and he played a season in the CFL. Still not really getting used much he was working as a plumber and teacher in the off-season. Then in 1960 he signed with the New York Titans (who would become the Jets in 1963) in the AFL and the rest is history.

He was billed as an “NFL reject.” But that reject would be part of the first professional wide receiver tandem to put up 1,000 yards each in a season, he would hold the record for total receptions and receiving yards, he was a four-time AFL All-Star, and two-time AFL First-team and Second-team. But even more important than that he is an AFL Champion, a Super Bowl Champion and a Pro Football Hall of Famer.

Don as a great autograph. It’s nice and big and totally fills up the card. He used a nice thick pen and that works great with the big autograph as well. The only problem is that there’s a smudge. It looks like there’s a fingerprint from when he (or someone) put it back in the envelope. It’s a shame to happen, but we know it does from time to time. It’s still a great one to get back.

Thanks Mr. Maynard! I’m giving this card a 7.
