The Story of the Autograph

Calvin “Pokey” Reese is a form infielder in the major leagues. He played from 1997 through 2004 with the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox.

Reese was born and raised in South Carolina. He grew up in a two-room house with an outside and wouldn’t own a glove until he played in high school. Scouts were so impressed with him in high school that the Reds drafted him in the first round of the 1991 MLB Draft with the 20th overall pick.

He made it to the big leagues and debuted in his first game on April 1, 1997. With in two years he won a Gold Glove and made in back-to-back in 2000. His 1999 season was probably his best. In 149 games he batted .285 with 10 homers, 52 RBI and 38 stolen bases. But his 2000 season wasn’t too shabby either with a .255 average, 12 homers and 46 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 135 games.

The winter of 2001/2002 was an interesting one for Reese. Within a span of 45 days he was part of four teams. He was traded to the Rockies, then to the Red Sox for Scott Hatteberg, then the Red Sox didn’t tender him a contract and he signed with the Pirates. He still made it to the Red Sox though. He played with them in 2004 and was part of their first team to win a World Series since 1918.

After that 2004 season he dealt with a lot of injuries that kept him from playing another major league game. He moved on tot the Mariner, Marlins and the Nationals before retiring in 2008.

Pokey really has a fancy signature. I love how his “P” and “R” almost match each other. Not quite but they really look like a pair. These came out really great, especially the Upper Deck card. Unfortunately I don’t know how many of Pokey’s cards that I have.

Thanks Mr. Reese! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
