The Story of the Autograph

Scott Hatteberg is a former catcher and first baseman in the major leagues. He played from 1995 through 2008 with the Boston Red Sox, Oakland Athletics, and Cincinnati Reds.

Hatteberg is a native Oregonian. He played his high school baseball in Yakima, Washington and was captain of the team in his senior year. He also played football in high school. From there he went on to play for the Washington State Cougars. He helped them to three Pac-10 North titles while he was there and was captain and MVP in 1991 while playing with another future major leaguer, Aaron Sele.

The Red Sox drafted Hatteberg in the 1991 MLB Draft. He debuted with the Sox four years later in 1995. There weren’t too many highlights during his time in Boston but he did hit into a triple play and then hit a grand slam in his next at-bat during a game against the Rangers in 2001. His time in Boston ended with a ruptured nerve in is elbow which would virtually kill his career. He was traded to the Rockies for Pokey Reese and then Colorado made him a free agent.

But as made famous in the movie Moneyball, Hatteberg was picked up by the Oakland A’s and taught how to play first base. He would end up helping the A’s to the playoffs in 2002 and 2003, losing in the ALDS both times. From there he moved on to the Reds. They would release him in 2008.

These days Hatteberg works in the front office in Oakland.

The Score on Scott Hatteberg – 7.5

I LOVE Scott’s signature. It came out really great on these cards. While I wish I had a card of his as an Athletic or even of him on the Red Sox, I like having a card of him in the minors and in a college uniform. The best of these cards is the Bowman Heritage card. Any Heritage card takes an autograph so well.

Thanks Mr. Hatteberg! I’m giving this one a 7.5.
