The Story of the Autograph

Otis Sistrunk is a former defensive lineman in the NFL. He played from 1972 to 1978 and spent his entire career with the Oakland Raiders.

Sistrunk is a native of Georgia. He was born and raised in Columbus and after high school joined the Marines. He left the military at 21, worked and played semi-pro football. Before the league he played in folded he was seen by a scout and the Rams thought he could play in the NFL. The Raiders saw him during a practice and signed him to play in 1972. He was one of a few players in the NFL at that time not to play in college.

He played for John Madden and was part of the Raider’s Super Bowl XI winning squad again the Minnesota Vikings. He was a Pro Bowler in 1974 as well as being a second-team All-Pro that season. He put up double digit sack seasons in 1973, 1975 and 1976 and had three career interceptions. He retired in 1978.

After played he wrestled in the NWA, partnering with Michael Hayes. They won the NWA Georgia Tag Team Championship in 1981. He retired shortly after as he did not enjoy wrestling.

Otis has a pretty crazy signature. I always think that it must be hard for players of that era to sign in any detailed way because their hands always look so beat up. I’m actually lucky that these cards all gave him a good place to sign, including that one with the black jersey.
