The Story of the Autograph

Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues is a former point guard in the NBA. He played from 1987 through 2001 with the Washington Bullets, Charlotte Hornets, Golden State Warriors, and Toronto Raptors.

Bogues was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. In high school he played with other future NBA players such as David Wingate, Reggie Williams and Reggie Lewis (the last two he graduated with). In his junior and senior seasons they went undefeated at 29-0 and 31-0. From there he moved on to Wake Forest University and ended his career as the ACC career leader in steals and assists.

But Bogues didn’t get to the NBA immediately. Before getting there he played for the Rhode Island Gulls of the USBL. He was drafted by the Washington Bullets as the 12th overall pick of the 1987 NBA Draft. Playing for the Bullets paired him with Manute Bol making the tallest (Bol is 7’7″) and shortest (Bogues is 5’3″) teammates.

His next stop was Charlotte. The Bullets left him unprotected and the Hornets selected him in the 1988 Expansion Draft when they came into the league along with the Miami Heat. That led to ten years with the Hornets and playing alongside Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson and having his best years in the league.

After his time as a player, he’s been involved with real estate and he was the head coach of the Charlotte Sting of the WNBA (where he was shorter than all of his players). He’s also coached a high school team and written an auto-biography.

This was a great signature to get back. Muggsy has a fun signature, and if you notice he does sign as “Tyrone”. That Upper Deck card is my absolute favorite of these. That’s not only because the signature looks great on there, but it’s also because it Muggsy being Muggsy. He’s going for the steal and doing some things he did best.

Thanks Mr. Bogues! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
