The Story of the Autograph

John Abraham played as a defensive end in the NFL for 15 seasons. He went to college at South Carolina and the Jets drafted him, but he also played with the Falcons and the Cardinals in his career. He made the Pro Bowl five times and was a First-team All-Pro three times.

John was born and raised in South Carolina, but he didn’t start out in football. He ran track (100 and 200-meters) and competing in the shot put and discuss. John didn’t play organized football until his senior year in high school. He was still recruited at South Carolina where he rang up 23.5 sacks and made first-team All-SEC. The Jets drafted him with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft.

He made an immediate impact for the Jets with 4.5 sacks in six games before an injury. And in the next few years, it was a lot of the same story with only injuries slowing him down. In his first six years he would record 53.5 sacks with the Jets and three of those years he had single digit sacks (two years where he was injured) and one of those was 9.5. Abraham tied a franchise record with four sacks in a game in 2001.

In 2006 he was traded to the Falcons in a draft day deal. With the Falcons he would set his career high in sacks with 16.5 in 2008. Somehow he wasn’t selected to the Pro Bowl that year. He became only the 25th player to record 100 sacks in 2010. In seven years as a Falcon he would total 68.5 sacks. He signed with the Cardinals (I’m just realizing that all his teams mascots fly) in 2013. In 2014 he left a game with a concuss early in the season and decided he should retire.

I was really hoping for something better out of this one. John usually appears to signs his initials and his number in a kind of square pattern. I kind of like the concept. However, for what he did on this cards it just didn’t come out great. He did use one of the greatest, blackest markers ever, and he does have a large signature, but this one didn’t come off as well as I’ve seen on other cards.

Thanks, Mr. Abraham! I’m giving this a 4.
