The Story of the Autograph

Manny Trillo is a former major league second baseman who spent 16 years in the majors. From 1973 through 1989 he played for the Athletics, Cubs (twice), Phillies, Indians, Expos, Giants and Reds.

Trillo, nicknamed “Indio”, is from Venezuela. The Phillies originally signed him in 1968 as a catcher and while he was in the minors they converted him to a third baseman. In 1969 he moved to the Athletics in the Rule 5 Draft and they had him play second base in 1973. He made his major league debut that same year on June 28th. He didn’t get to play in the the 1973 postseason because of some roster rules and controversy but did play the next year when they won another World Series.

He was traded in the offseason to the Cubs along with Darold Knowles and Bob Locker. He became known as a great fielder with the Cubs until they traded him to the Phillies. There he was a big part of the Phillies championship in 1980 including winning the NLCS MVP.

Trillo made four All-Star teams in his career: 1977 and then 1981-1983. He also won three Gold Glove awards and two Silver Slugger awards. All of his awards and recognition came (except his 1977 All-Star nod) came while playing for the Phillies where he was reunited with his minor league coach Dallas Green.

The Score on Manny Trillo – 6.5

Manny has a pretty cool signature. It almost looks as if his first name and last name, while still similar, are almost different styles. I’m sure that’s down to the way the letter can run together in his first name verse the way they do in his last name. I’ll definitely have to find some Phillies cards for him to sign since those were his best years.

Thanks Mr. Trillo! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
