The Story of the Autograph

Darold Knowles is a former left-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. From 1965 to 1980 he played with the Orioles, Phillies, Senators, Athletics, Cubs, Rangers, Expos and Cardinals.

Knowles was born and raised in Missouri. He went to the University of Missouri and was later signed by the Orioles in 1961. He made his first appearance for the Orioles in April of 1965. He was traded to the Phillies after the season and that’s where he started to get significant time with 69 appearances that season. He then moved on to the Senators, again via trade, where he would make his one and only All-Star appearance in 1969.

It was another trade that brought him to the Athletics in 1971. There he part of the A’s great run of three straight World Series Championships from 1972 to 1974. He became the first pitcher to appear in all seven games of a World Series in 1973 and gave up no runs and earning two saves in 6.1 innings.

He finished out his career by jumping around a bit more to the Cubs, Rangers, Expos and Cardinals. His best ERA year was in 1972 with the As when he had a 1.37 ERA. He tallied 27 saves in 1970, the year after his All-Star appearance. He later went into coaching.

Darold has a nice and strong signature and he used a pretty thick marker to help show that off. You can tell he’s a left from the way he signs on a different angle than most signatures of righties. These are really great though. I’m glad I found some cards of him on the A’s in the prime Championship years of the 70’s.

Thanks Mr. Knowles! I’m giving these a 6.5.
