The Story of the Autograph

Jim Barr played for the San Francisco Giants and the California Angels. He’s best known as a Giant because he played in San Francisco the longest during two different stints. He a California guy all the way having been born and raised in California, went to USC and then played for the Giants and Angels.

After winning a couple of NCAA championships at USC in 1968 and 1970 he finally signed with a team that drafted him. He was drafted five different times actually but didn’t sign until the Giants took him in the third round of the 1970 draft. He wasn’t in the minors very long and debuted in July of 1971. In 1972 e set the record for consecutive batters retired. Over two starts he got 41 players in a row out. That record as since been tied and then broken.

Barr won more than 10 games in a season five times in a row and six times for his career. His best season was probably 1976 when he went 15-12 with a 2.89 ERA in 252.1 innings. He also had a great season in 1974 going 13-9 with a 2.74 ERA in 239.2 innings. Bot of those seasons were with the Giants.

Jim as a bit of a whacky signature. It’s definitely recognizable, especially his last name, but it’s not quite consistent on each card. To me it kind of gives the impression that he messed his signature up on these. He might have on the ’84 Topps card but it’s a little hard to tell because it’s a bit busy. It also almost looks like he signs his first name backwards on some of these.

Thanks Mr. Barr! I’m giving these a 5.5.
