The Story of the Autograph

Joe Montana is a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. When you think of good looking, leader, face-of-the-franchise quarterbacks, Joe Montana is right there with the best of all time. He’s not only a multiple Super Bowl winner but a multiple Super Bowl MVP award winner. Pro Bowls, league MVPs, etc., if there was something he could have won when he played he did and that helped him to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH.

Montana grew up in Western Pennsylvania which was a hotbed of great quarterbacks. He went on to play at Notre Dame from 1974 through 1978. He played sparingly in the beginning because Notre Dame didn’t play freshmen, then they felt he wasn’t ready to be the full-time starter and then he separated his shoulder and red-shirted. After the third game of the 1977 season, Montana was the man. He led them to the national title with a win over Texas in the Cotton Bowl and an 11-1 record. After another great season in 1978, the San Francisco 49ers drafted him in the third round with the 82nd pick of the draft. He was taken behind Jack Thompson, Phil Simms, and Steve Fuller.

Montana was the starter by 1981 after playing behind Steve DeBerg. With Bill Walsh running the show for the West Coast offense, and Jerry Rice and John Taylor catching passes, and Roger Craig running the ball, plus a good defense… the 49ers were the team of the 80’s. Montana helped lead them to Super Bowls wins after the 1981, 1984, 1988 and 1989 seasons. 1989 might have been one of his best years despite missing some games. He passed for 3,500+ yards and completed a league leading 70.2% of his passes with 26 TDs to only 8 interceptions. He led the league in yards per attempt and yards per game as well as with his 112.4 passer rating.

His stats were crazy and they were only limited by his injuries in some years. That’s what ended his time in San Francisco. After missing most of the season in 1992 and having Steve Young with the 49ers, Montana went on to Kansas City and had two more good years before retiring.

This is one of those that you really want to home is real. I have no idea if it is or not, but I’m hoping for real. Maybe he’s a guy who signs via auto-pen or something. But it was sent to the stadium so there’s hope there that that means something to this one’s authenticity. Still nice to get. It’s one of those times though that if you knew you would get it back you would send a better card.

Thanks Mr. Montana! This one gets a 6.
