The Story of the Autograph

Jim Maler is a former major league first baseman. His career spanned three seasons from 1981 to 1983 and all were spent with the Seattle Mariners.

Maler was born in New York but grew up in Florida. After playing baseball, football and basketball in high school he was the Miami Herald Athlete of the Year as a senior. Then he went to Miami Dade College and received similar honors playing football and baseball. He had a hitting streak record as a freshman that lasted until 2007. The Mariners drafted in the first round of the 1978 MLB Draft with the fifth overall pick. After a few years in the minors he made his major league debut on September 3, 1981.

He played just twelve games that first season, a career high 64 in 1982 and then 26 in 1983. Overall he hit .226 with five homers and 31 RBI for his career over 102 games. But some highlights were debuting in the longest game in Fenway history (19 innings), having the first hit in the Metrodome.

The Mariners traded him to the Mets in 1984 but he never played in the majors again after July 24, 1983. In 1984 he suffered a devastating knee injury that ended prospects for making the majors again.

One of these game out well and the other one not as well. The 1984 Topps card is interesting because it was after he was already traded to the Mets. That’s the one that came out best. The 1983 Topps cards didn’t take the ink as well and you can sort of see the bubbling and not so crisp edges on parts of the signature.

Thanks Mr. Maler! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
