The Story of the Autograph

Jim Eppard is a former outfielder and first baseman in the major leagues. He made appearances in the majors between 1987 and 1990 with the California Angels and Toronto Blue Jays.

Eppard was born in South Bend, Indiana. He was drafted twice before he signed with a major league team. The first time was by the Chicago Cubs in the 11th round of the 1980 MLB Draft while he was at Citrus College. Two years later he was drafted in the 13th round by the Oakland A’s while he was with the University of California, Berkley. He signed with them but would not make it to the majors with them.

After five years in the minor leagues the Angels purchased his contract in January of 1987. He would make his first major league appearance as a September call up later that year on September 8, 1987. He only played eight games for the rest of that season. He got more time the next year, playing in a career high 56 games and hitting .283, but he was always up and down to the minors.

The Angels released him after the 1989 season and he signed as a free agent with the Blue Jays. He couldn’t break into the major league team with them and only played six games in his final major league season, 1990.

In 2012 he was the Angels hitting coach but was fired after the following season.

Dave has a pretty open signature. There’s not a lot of definition to it. His “D” almost looks like its actually a “J”, but then if you pay attention to how the letters are lined up it makes sense as a “D.” The 1989 Fleer cards are just hard to sign because of those dark Angels jerseys.

Thanks Mr. Eppard! I’m giving this return a 6.
