The Story of the Autograph

Toby Harrah (given name Colbert Dale Harrah) played baseball in the major leagues from 1969 to 1986. Over that long career he played with the Texas Rangers (in two different stints), Cleveland Indians, and New York Yankees. He actually started out as a Washington Senator the year before they moved to Texas and become the Rangers.

Harrah was born in West Virginia and grew up in Ohio. No team drafted him because they thought he was going to college, but he ended up working in a factory until the Phillies found out he never went to school and signed him. He spent a year in the Phillies and moved on to Washington. He started out as a shortstop and then moved to third base in 1976. He made the All-Star team three times with the Rangers in 1972, 1975, and 1976.

He was traded to Cleveland in 1978 for Buddy Bell (who was a very similar player). He made the All-Star team for a fourth time with the Indians in 1982. That might be his best career season with 162 games played, 100 runs scored, 25 homers, 78 RBI, 17 stolen bases, and a .304 average (the highest of his career). He would be traded two more times to the Yankees and then back to the Rangers were he would finish out his career.

This one is a bit of a shame. I really like Toby’s signature. While sometimes I feel like it could be bigger, he tends to fit it on the right place for each card. He’s also got just the right amount of style with the way he does the “y” and the “H”. But then he used a ball point pen… Nooooo! These came out pretty well considering, but I feel like it could have been so much better with a Sharpie.

Thanks Mr. Harrah! I’m giving this return a 6.
