The Story of the Autograph

Gil Heredia is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1991 to 2001 with the San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos, Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics.

Heredia is a native of Arizona. He went to Pima College before moving on to Arizona and playing for the Wildcats. In 1986 he helped them with the College World Series. He was drafted three times before signing. The first was by the Pirates in the first round of the 1984 MLB Draft with the sixteenth overall pick, the second was in 1985 by the Orioles in the sixth round, and the final time when he chose to sign was with the San Francisco Giants in the ninth round of the 1987 MLB Draft. He would make his major league debut for them on September 1, 1991.

In the beginning of his career he mostly worked mostly as a reliever and then towards the end he was mostly a starter. He got his first significant time with the Expos, after the Giants traded him there in 1992. He had a good season with them in 1994, going 6-3 with a 3.46 ERA in 39 games with three starts. Two of his better years were towards the end of his career in Oakland when he went 13-8 and 15-11, albeit with a 4+ ERA both of those years.

Gil has a super loopy signature. I’m not exactly sure what in his name makes it loopy though. While I would say it give it character, it doesn’t make it easy to pick out that it’s his. Usually using a 1995 Fleer card is a mistake as autographs don’t come out well on those but this one was different. But I will say that I don’t have a lot of Gil’s cards so I didn’t have much choice.

Thanks Mr. Heredia! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
