The Story of the Autograph

Garth Butcher is a former defenseman in the NHL. He played for the Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, and Toronto Maple Leafs from 1981 to 1995.

Butcher is a native of Saskatchewan, Canada. He played junior hockey with teams in his home town of Regina before moving on to the Western Hockey League. In 1981 he was one of the top prospects along with Dale Hawerchuk, Grant Fuhr and Al MacInnis. He was drafted by the Canucks with the 10th overall pick that year.

He continued as a junior and was brought up to play just five games for the Canucks in that first season. He continued to develop over the next two years and was a full time player bu the 1984-85 season. Butcher’s game was never about scoring goals. He was adept at getting to players on the other team, distracting them and provoking them into taking penalties.

Before the end of the 1990-91 season he was traded with Dan Quinn to the St. Louis Blues for Geoff Courtnall, Robert Dirk, Sergio Momesso, Cliff Ronning and a draft pick. He spent three seasons in St. Louis before another trade to Quebec and then another to Toronto in his final year, really moving him around a lot in this final years.

There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot to Garth’s signature until you really get a good look at it. Unfortunately the cards and the images on these, with the Canucks old black uniforms don’t really let you see it that well. It’s too bad it gets in the way because there really is more too it, it’s just hidden.

Thanks Mr. Butcher! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
