The Story of the Autograph

John Martin is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He mostly pitched as a reliever in the four seasons he played in from 1980 to 1983. During that time he played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers.

Martin was born and raised in Michigan. He went to college at Eastern Michigan University and helped them to two conference championships while he was there. The Tigers then drafted him in the 27th round of the 1978 MLB Draft. He wouldn’t play for the Tigers in the majors just yet though. In 1980 the Tigers traded him to the Cardinals with Al Greene for Jim Lentine.

He made his debut for the Cardinals on August 27th, 1980. To close out that season he appeared in nine games with five starts and put up a 2-3 record with a 4.29 ERA. He was back in the majors the following season, this time with more time and more starts. He started 15 of the 17 games he played in and went 8-5 with a 3.42 ERA what is probably his best major league season.

After one more eventful year with the Cards (they won a World Series) he went back to Detroit in 1983 when the Tigers purchased his contract. He didn’t play in the majors in 1984, missing out on the Tigers run to their World Series win that year, and was released by them in 1985.

The Score on John Martin – 6.5

John has a very shot signature but he fills up the card enough from side to side. I like the blue marker on these but I think it came out best on the 1982 Fleer because you can see it best. Of course it helps that that is the year in which the Cards won a World Series so I think it makes that one a little more special in that way too.

Thanks Mr. Martin! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
