The Story of the Autograph

Doug Cosbie is a former NFL tight end. He played from 1979 through 1988 with the Dallas Cowboys.

Cosbie was born and raised in California. In high schools he played football, basketball, baseball and track. He helped his school reach the state title game in 1973. He went to a couple other colleges before ending up at Santa Clara University. He had some great years there and the Cowboys drafted him in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft.

It took him a couple years to break into the starting lineup but he did just that in 1981. From there he continued to emerge as a great tight end and set team records for receptions as a tight end and in 1983 made his first Pro Bowl. He would repeat those two feats in 1984 and 1985 as well.

The offense changed a bit with the drafting of Herschel Walker who took a lot of receptions out of the back field. By 1988 he was a bit limited with injuries and with Jimmy Johnson coming in as a new coach in 1989, they left him unprotected and he because a free agent. He tried to make it with the Broncos in 1989 but called it a career during training camp.

Doug has a pretty cool bubbly signature that I like. Sometimes I wonder how guys come to sign like they do. In this case it makes me think “do the letters in his name lead him to make it bubbly or is that the way he likes to write.” Kind of a which comes first thing.

Thanks Mr. Cosbie! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
