The Story of the Autograph

Anthony Gonzales played wide receiver in the NFL for 5 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. After a successful college career at Ohio State, Gonzalez went to the NFL and had a few solid years only to have his career derailed by injuries. These days he is running for a seat in congress.

Gonzalez grew up in Ohio and after being a two-sport star in high school (football and track) he went on to play as a Buckeye at Ohio State. He lettered for three years and played with future NFLers Santonio Holmes and Ted Ginn, Jr as well as Heisman Trophy Winning QB Troy Smith. He earn an All-Big Ten choice and was also an Academic All-American.

The Colts selected Gonzalez with the 32nd overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. He was drafted to fill the slot receiver position with Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. Anthony started with two solid years in Indianapolis. Over 29 games in those first two years he had 37 catches for 576 yards and three touchdowns and then 57 catches for 664 yards and four touchdowns. Then in 2009 he earned a starting wide receiver spot when Marvin Harrison was released. But in the first game of the year he injured his knee. While he hoped to come back before the end of the season, he was out the whole year.

The next year he only played two games and injured his PCL in Week 8 and was out the rest of the year. His role kept diminishing the next year when he only played eight games and didn’t catch a pass. He signed with the Patriots in 2012, but he was released in May and decided to retire and go to Stanford business school.

Anthony has a pretty good signature. It doesn’t necessarily look like his name, but its got some good style to it. The best version of his signature for me is on the ’07 card, and I think the worst is the ’09 card. But the ’09 card is more because the card is darker where he signed. But that 2010 Topps card is a pretty cool card. The picture is awesome and I love a card with the team colors in the design. I think that one just comes out the best overall. I only wish he signed with a thicker marker.

Thanks Mr. Gonzalez! These get a 6.
