The Story of the Autograph

Heath Shuler played as a quarterback in the NFL for four years. Three years were spent in Washington and the last was spent in New Orleans. He went to the University of Tennessee and had a great collegiate career, but his NFL didn’t pan out.

Shuler was born in a small town in the western part of North Carolina. It was near the Tennessee border and in the Great Smoky Mountains. He was a standout QB in high school and helped his team to two state championships and was named the North Carolina Player of the year. That earned him a scholarship to play for the Volunteers. He was one of the top QBs in the SEC and help nearly all of the Tennessee passing records by the time he left (but would later be overtaken by Peyton Manning). He was second in the Heisman voting to Charlie Ward in 1993.

The Redskins drafted him in the first round in 1994 with the third overall pick. His career didn’t start off great because he held out of training camp until he received a 7-year $19+ million contact. He was supposed to be the quarterback of the future, but ultimately poor play led to a controversy with Gus Frerotte who was taken in the seventh round of the same draft (there’s some parallels between RGII and Cousins there). He was benched by the third year and was traded to the Saints. By 1997 Football Outsiders called him the “least valuable quarterback of 1997.”

He went on to real estate, but more importantly, became a member of the US House of Representative in 2006 and served until 2013.

I really wish I had a different card for Heath to sign, but this was all I had. The card is really way to busy to take a signature very well. I really like Heath’s autograph though and it’s too bad the card gets in the way. He uses a great marker and he takes up a good amount of space on the card without signing his head or anything like that. I hope I find another card of his because I’d love to resend.

Thanks Mr. Shuler! This one gets a 6.
