The Story of the Autograph

Amos Otis is a former outfielder in the major leagues. His major league career spanned from 1967 to 1984 and he played with the New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Otis is a native of Mobile, Alabama. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 1965 MLB Draft. But he never made it to the majors with the Red Sox. The Mets drafted him in the 1967 Minor League Draft and he would make his major league debut with them on September 6, 1967. He would be back in the minors for 1968 and then back up for some limited time in 1969. Gil Hodges and the Mets were trying to make him into a third baseman and he constantly clashed with Hodges.

After the 1969 season the Mets traded him to the Royals for Joe Foy. The Royals put him in centerfield and saw immediate dividends. Over the next seven seasons Otis would be an All-Star five times including four straight seasons from 1970 to 1974. He also earned three Gold Gloves during that time and saw some MVP votes along the way. He would spend 13 seasons in Kansas City and would be a good part of some of their playoff runs and a World Series run.

He was a good hitter with a .277 batting average over his career. That included five season where he hit over .290. He led the league in doubles twice in 1970 and 1976. And he could steal a base and once led the league with 52 in 1971. He eventually lost his outfield spot to Willie Wilson after his long run with the Royals. He later coached with the Padres and Colorado Rockies.

This is a nice return from Amos, but I think I can find some better cards for him to sign. I like the 1973 card, but it’s just such a busy image to sign over, and the other cards are of him not in his prime. I wasn’t alive when he was a Met, but in hearing the stories and seeing the stats, he is definitely a bit of the one that got away as a Mets fan. Thankfully he went to the American League because it always feels like these guys come back to bite us.

Thanks Mr. Otis! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
