The Story of the Autograph
Eugene Lockhart played in the NFL from 1984 through 1992 as a linebacker with the Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots. He was born and raised in Texas and went to the University of Houston. As a Cougar he was a two-year starter and in the ’83 season he was one of the captains of the team and led the team in tackles. Dallas selected him in the 6th round 1984 NFL Draft.
As a Cowboy he had a pretty good rookie year. He because the first rookie in Cowboys history to start at middle linebacker. Bob Breunig went down with a back injury (and retired at the end of the year). Lockhart took advantage and led the team with 86 tackles and was named to the 1984 All-Rookie Team. He would lead the team in tackles over the next three years as well. He was a punishing tackler and would have more than 100 tackles in every year except 1987 after his rookie year. But these were some tough times for the Cowboys and it was hard to make a Pro Bowl when your team wasn’t very good.
Lockhart was traded to the Patriots when he didn’t fit into Head Coach Jimmy Johnson’s system. In exchange they got a first round pick and ended up taking Russell Maryland. Among other things the trade ended up netting a 1992 second round pick that ended up being Jerome Henderson. He would play a couple more years in New England and then retire in August of 1993.
The Score on Eugene Lockhart – 5.0
Eugene has an OK autograph, but what I think gets me about it is how it gets as he keeps signing. I would bet the first card he signed. I’ve actually seen guys do this in-person as well.
Thanks Mr. Lockhart! I’m giving this return a 5.
