The Story of the Autograph

Kurt Bevacqua played in the major leagues from 1971 through 1985. He played with enough teams that I don’t want to even list them all here. But some of those stints were his second time with teams like the Royals, Pirates and Padres. I think Kurt’s story is one of those of a journeyman who, when put on the big stage, took advantage of his time there.

Kurt was drafted by the Mets in the 1966 Draft and then the Braves in the January 1967 draft but didn’t sign with either team. He went to college and then signed with the Cincinnati Reds in the secondary phase of the June 1967 Draft. He played all over the field for the Reds in the minors. Then in 1971 he was traded to the Indians and made his major league debut shortly after. He jumped back-ad-forth to a lot of places after that.

Bevacqua ended up on the Padres at the end of his career and in 1984 found himself on the way to the World Series. It would be his one and only trip to the post season. During the season he hit just .200 with one home run and nine RBI. But during the Series, Dick Williams used him as the DH in all five games. He started out as a goat because in game one he tried to stretch a double into a triple and would have been the tying run, but was out at third. But he came back in Game 2. He helped with Game 2 with a three run homer. Overall he hit a team high .412 with two home runs (Terry Kennedy hit the only other Padres homer).

The Score on Kurt Bevacqua – 5.5

Kurt signed one of my cards but sent the other three back with a letter noting how much he charges. That’s fine and I totally get it, plus the price he was asking was fair. I like that he signed one of the cards. However, it also made me think the address I used wasn’t his as the signature looks interesting, but also almost like it’s crossed out. I’m not sure if this is his standard or not. It’s big and strong which I like.

Thanks Mr. Bevacqua! I’m giving this a 5.5 since I’m just not sure about it.

Bill, I have several of Kurt’s signatures and that one looks like mine, just with a thick marker.

Good to hear. Thanks for letting me know.

I like it when guys still throw you a bone and sign a card even when they are telling you they charge. It just makes me a little weary of the circumstances. I shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth though.
