The Story of the Autograph

Gene Garber played as a right-handed sidearm relief pitcher in the major leagues for 19 seasons over 20 years. During that long career he played for the Pirates, Royals (twice), Phillies, and Braves. Most of those were two to three year stints but he spent the majority of his career in Atlanta (1978-1987).

Garber was born and raised in Lancaster, PA and was selected by the Pirates in the 20th round of the 1965 draft. He worked his way through the Pirates system and made his major league debut in June of 1969. He was only used sparingly during his time with the Pirates. He made only 20 appearances in those first three major league seasons. That changed when he moved on to Kansas City.

In October of 1972 he was traded to the Royals. He would start eight games for them in 1973 and those would the last starts of his career. But he would also have 11 saves that year. The Phillies then picked him up in 1974. He made two postseason appearances of his career in Philadelphia as the Phillies made the playoffs in 1976 and 1976. But in 1978 he was again traded, this time to Atlanta.

He spent a long time in Atlanta and still ranks third on their career saves list behind Smoltz and Kimbrel. In 1982 he had a career high 30 saves when Atlanta made a postseason run, but even after so long in Atlanta they would trade him to the Royals where he would finis out his career.

The Score on Gene Garber – 6.5

Gene as a pretty good signature and it came out really well on all of these cards. I’m actually really surprised in that he spent so much time in Atlanta, but I only included one card of him as a Brave (and he’s giving the shifty eyes in the picture). I think while Gene as a pretty standard style for a signature the two “G”s and the swoop at the end give it a little bit of flair.

Thanks Mr. Garber! These get a 6.5.
