The Story of the Autograph

“Gentleman Jim” Lonborg pitched in the major leagues for 15 seasons. He started for the Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and Philadelphia Phillies in is career and was known for pitching inside.

Jim was born and raised in Southern California. He graduated from Stanford before venturing into the major leagues. While he experienced more consistent winning seasons in Philadelphia, his 1967 year with the Red Sox was the best of his career. He went 22-9 and lead the league in wins, strikeouts (246) and games started (39). He also lead the league in hit batsmen wit 19 (which he would do again before he left Boston). That record helped the Red Sox to their first World Series since 1946 where they faced the St. Louis Cardinals. Lonborg pitched Game 2 and it was only the fourth one-hitter in World Series history. He also won Game 5, but lost Game 7 on only two days rest. He made his one and only All-Star game that year and won the Cy Young Award.

He unfortunately tore ligaments skiing later that year and from there his career was marked by different injuries. He did have success in Philadelphia and helped them make the playoffs a couple times. After retiring, Jim became Dr. James Lonborg and became as a dentist.

This is my first autograph from Jim and I wonder if he would sign differently on a different card. This one doesn’t have a great place to sign and he kind of found the best spot. I like a something a bit bigger so I wonder if he would take up more space if the card would take it. I’ll have to see if I can find a different card of Jim’s for another attempt.

Thanks Dr. Lonborg! I’m giving this one a 5.
