The Story of the Autograph

Zach Duke is a lefthanded pitcher who is currently with the Minnesota Twins. He’s also pitched for the Pirates, Diamondbacks, Nationals, Reds, Brewers, White Sox and Cardinals.

The Pirates drafted Zach out of high school in Texas in 2001. He worked his way through the organization and made his debut with the Bucs in 2005. He had a lot of success in his campaigns in the minors. During his time in Pittsburgh he was used as a starter in all but one game in his six years there. After going 8-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 2005, he wouldn’t post another winning record. From there Zach started moving around a lot and has only made 11 starts since playing for the Pirates and nine of those came in 2010 with the Diamondbacks.

He moved to the Diamondbacks via trade in 2010 after the season. After 2011 in Arizona he elected to become a free agent and signed with the Astros, but was released before the season. The Nationals picked him up for 2012 and would release him the middle of 2013. An 8.71 ERA as a reliever in 20 2/3 innings will do that. The Reds picked him up from there and he played out 2013 in Cincy. As a free agent he signed with Milwaukee and re for 2014 and ended up limiting lefthanders to a average.

Finally it looks like Zach might have a place to be for more than a year when he signed a three year deal with the White Sox. But after a year and a half in Chicago, the Sox traded him to the Cardinals. He at least half of 2017 with an injury and finished his time out in St. Louis. Now he’s playing on another one year deal with the Twins.

I am really digging Zach’s signature. I love the blue marker he used as it really sticks out. Honestly I didn’t get where the lower loop came from in between “Zach” and “Duke”. Then I realized, duh!, it’s “Zachary.” I know it sounds really simple but that little extra makes his signature even cooler to me. And you have to love that “Z” don’t you. Capital Zs can really make an autograph. If you asked me to nitpick this, I would have wanted the 2011 Topps Base card to be in the center.

Thanks Mr. Duke! I’m giving these an 8.5.
