The Story of the Autograph

Wes Helms is a former third and first baseman in the majors leagues. He played in thirteen seasons between 1998 and 2011 with the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, Florida Marlins (twice), and Philadelphia Phillies.

Helms is a native of Gastonia, North Carolina. He was drafted after high school by the Braves in tenth round of the 1994 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for them on September 5, 1998, playing in seven games to close out that season. He wouldn’t appear again in the majors until 2000 when he made it into another six games that year. The following season, in 2001, he established himself as a major league with Atlanta.

After the 2002 season Atlanta traded him along with John Foster to the Brewers in exchange for Ray King. He then had one of his best major league seasons in 2003. He played in 134 games, hitting .261 and hitting a career high 23 homers with another career high of 67 RBI. On the negative side, he struck out a career high 131 times (his next closest total for a season was 76 in 2010). He was with the Marlins for most of the the latter half of his career. Before finishing he went back to the Braves but never made it back to the majors.

In more recent years he coached in the minors in Lehigh Valley, Birmingham and Charlotte.

The Score on Wes Helms – 7.0

Wes has some unique things about his signature from my perspective. His “W” is a little weak in the middle and he has a really interesting way that I think he is doing the “H” with that sort of curve he puts in. I think my favorite of this bunch is the ’09 Upper Deck card, but I like adding another ’11 Topps to my collection as I have a bunch of those.

Thanks Mr. Helms! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
