The Story of the Autograph

Walt Williams is a former small forward in the NBA. He played from 1992 to 2003 with the Sacramento Kings, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, and Dallas Mavericks.

Williams was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Maryland. He played for Maryland just a couple years after the death of Len Bias. He stayed with the school even though they were under sanctions and helped coach Gary Williams to start building his program. After successful seasons as a Terp, he was drafted by the Kings in the first round of the 1992 NBA Draft with the seventh overall pick.

He started off well and averaged 17 points per game in his rookie year. That would be his career high and it helped him make the All-Rookie Team in the 1992-93 season. He was a starter into his third season with the Kings, but unfortunately he wasn’t with them too much longer. He moved around a lot between 1995 and 1998. But no matter where he was he was a good player and had a good three-point shot. He even participated in the 1997 AT&T Shootout.

He’s known for wearing high socks like his idol George Gervin. These days he works the Terps broadcasts.

I love that I found some of Walt’s cards. I really didn’t think I had any because he played during an era when I collected less in general, let alone for basketball. These are a bit busy though so it doesn’t let them autograph show off very well. I wish you could catch his tall sock on one of these cards though.

Thanks Mr. Williams! I’m giving this return a 6.
