The Story of the Autograph

Walt Garrison is a former fullback and running back in the NFL. He played from 1966 to 1974 and spent his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys.

Garrison was born and raised in Texas. He played linebacker in high school but also played basketball and baseball. He went on to Oklahoma State to play for the Cowboys on a scholarship thinking he would be a linebacker. He started that way but was moved to running back and even though he was a backup that first year he only finished 12 yards behind the leader on the team in rushing. He would lead the Big Eight in yards as a junior and almost had 1,000 yards the following season.

He was good enough to be selected by the Cowboys with their fifth round pick in the 1966 NFL Draft. But he was also chosed by the Chiefs in the AFL draft. He played less in his first two seasons and was mainly used as a return man. In 1969 he had one of his best seasons with 818 yards rushing and 131 yards receiving and scoreing two touchdowns. He later would have a career high with seven rushing and three receiving touchdowns in 1972, helping him make the Pro Bowl. That was the season after the Cowboys won the Super Bowl.

In 1973 he started experiencing nerve issues in his neck. It gave him headaches and he couldn’t sleep. He would only play one more season before retiring. That was due to a steer wrestling accident that happened at a rodeo in Montana.

The Score on Walt Garrison – 5.5

This is such a great 70’s football card. Walt was a “Real Cowboy” and he certainly looks like one here. His signature is masked a little bit by how busy the image his behind it, but he has a solid signature on there somewhere.

Thanks Mr. Garrison! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
