The Story of the Autograph

Wade Boggs is a Hall of Fame third baseman. He played from 1982 through 1999 with the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Boggs was born in Omaha, Nebraska but both of this parents were in the military and he moved around a lot. His family finally settle in Tampa, Florida when he was eleven. He was an All-State football player in addition to playing baseball.  He started at quarterback but changed positions to avoid an injury that would effect his baseball career. Still, South Carolina offered him a scholarship. But the Red Sox drafted him in the seventh rount of the 1976 MLB Draft and he signed with them.

He finally made it up wot the bigs and debuted on April 10, 1982. From day one he could hit and he was third in the Rookie of the Year voting in 1982. But in 1983 he followed it up with a batting title (.361 average), a Silver Slugger and votes for the MVP award. That was the start of winning four out of the next five batting titles. Then in 1985 he started a streak of 12-straight All-Star games. He also won six more Silver Sluggers and Gold Gloves in 1994 and 1995.

The Red Sox narrowly missed a World Series win in 1986 and after a slump season of 1992, Boggs moved on. But where he went was the crazy part. The Yankees offered him an extra year of contract over other suitors and he was off to New York. It was there in 1996 that he would win his World Series ring, famously riding on the back of an NYPD horse in the celebration.

Probably one of the things most people find interesting comes from Jim Rice calling him “chicken man”. Boggs had a superstition to eat chicken before every game (among other superstitions). But I guess if it seemed like they worked…

The Score on Wade Boggs – 7.0

Wade has a great signature, but I think in his case I chose good year cards over good signing cards. The 1994 Score was one of my only of him as a Yankee, but that’s the one that came out best. But I love that 1990 Upper Deck card because of the subject matter. When I realized I had taken that card out as a potential card to get signed I had to use it.

Thanks Mr. Boggs! I’m giving this return a 7.
