The Story of the Autograph
Theo Epstein has been in the front office of a major league team for a long time considering he’s such a young guy. He’s not the first, but I’d say he might be one of the most well-known of the “celebrity” GMs of the like of guys like Billy Beane. They either have stories about them or they were just in the news a lot.
Epstein was born in New York and then grew up in Brookline, MA. He basically spent his youth dreaming of working for the Red Sox. While attending Yale he actually picked up an internship working for the Orioles and then after graduating he worked as a PR assistant with them. He moved with Larry Lucchino to the Padres to work in player development and while in San Diego went to law school. That allowed him to get involved in negotiations, work with the GM and move up to Director of Baseball Operations.
Lucchino moved to the Red Sox in 2001 and hired Epstein to follow him to Boston as the GM. While with the Red Sox he built them into a World Series winning club. He actually resigned in 2005 and then came back the next year. He did that until 2011 when he moved on to the Chicago Cubs. He helped build the Cubs into a World Series winner and these days, perennial playoff team. He resigned with them in 2016 and should be there through 2021.
The Score on Theo Epstein – 4.5
Theo has a fine signature, but these are both damaged. The 2008 card is really rubbed off and the 2017 card has more of a smudge on it. I looked back at an older return I had from Theo and that one was damaged as well, although not to the extent these are. The other thing I noticed is that the older card I had was personalized and said “Best wishes” and that’s not included on these. I don’t know if he stopped personalizing or it just happens to be that way for this return.
