The Story of the Autograph

Stump Mitchell, who’s given name is Lyvonia Albert Mitchell, is a former running back in the NFL and currently a running backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals. He played for the Cardinals (in St. Louis and Phoenix) and the Chiefs in the NFL and later on one year with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League.

Mitchell was born and raised in Georgia and played is college ball at The Citadel. He holds school records there for rushing yards in a season and for a career. In 1980 he had the second most rushing yards in NCAA Division I to Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers.

The Cardinals drafted him in the 9th round in the 1981 NFL draft. He played for the Cardinals for most of his career with his best year being 1985 when he broke the thousand yard barrier and scored seven touchdowns rushing. He also added 500+ yards receiving and another three touchdowns. He has the second most all-purpose yards in franchise history to Larry Fitzgerald.

After his playing days he’s worked as a coach. He was a head coach in college for both Morgan State and Southern. In the NFL he’s worked mostly as a running backs coach. Recently he worked for the Jets until the end of this past season when he was let go and the Cardinals picked him up for the same job for next season.

Stump signed with a great marker and has some good size to his autograph. I love the 1982 Topps Record Breaker card. That year for football was one of my favorites because I used to love drawing the helmets on those cards. The only problem with these is just the normal busy football card getting in the way of the autograph.
