The Story of the Autograph

Steve Pearce is a former outfielder and first baseman in the major leagues. He played from 2007 to 2019 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles (three times), Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox.

Pearce was born and raised in Lakeland, Florida. He grew up a Red Sox fan because his father grew up near Boston and was a fan. He first went to college at Indian River Community College in Florida. While there he was drafted by the Twins in the 45th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, but didn’t sign.

He transferred to the University of South Carolina and starred for the Gamecocks during his time there. He was drafted twice while at South Carolina. First by the Red Sox in the 10th round of the 2004 MLB Draft, and then by the Pirates in the 8th round of the 2005 MLB Draft where he finally chose to sign.

He made his major league debut with the Pirates on September 1, 2007. He didn’t far all that great with the Pirates and only got in as many as 60 games in a season once in 2009. He moved around a lot after his time in Pittsburgh. It wasn’t really until 2014 during his second stint with the Orioles that he got some significant time.

He broke out a bit in that 2014 season. He hit career highs in games played (102), homers (21), RBI (49), stolen bases (5), and put up a .293 average. He was never really a full time player but started to contribute a lot more with each team he played for.

In 2018 he was traded to the Boston Red Sox and they made it to the World Series. Pearce had an amazing Series and earned World Series MVP honors while the Red Sox beat the Dodgers. In five games he hit .333 with three homers and eight RBI. He only had four hits but boy did he make them count.

I was really glad when these came back. It’s always nice to get a real inscription like this and I think I like it even more from Steve on that Heritage card. I’ve seen him add it to cards here and there for people. I think this score is just as much for the inscription as to how these came out.

Thanks Mr. Pearce! I’m giving this return an 8.
