The Story of the Autograph

Steve Lyons is a former infielder and outfielder in the major leagues. He played in nine seasons from 1985 to 1993 for the Red Sox (three different times), White Sox, Braves, and Expos.

Lyons was born in Washington state and grew up in Oregon. He went on to Oregon State on a baseball scholarship. The Red Sox took him as their first round draft pick in the 1981 MLB draft. He made his major league debut for them on April 15th of 1985. He could hit pretty well, had some speed and could play a lot of different positions and it all came together for him to show something off in Spring Training of 1985.

The Red Sox traded Lyons to the White Sox for Tom Seaver in June of 1986 and he spent the biggest chunk of his career for Chicago from 1986 through 1990. His best seasons of his career were there in 1988 and 1989.

He was definitely a different type of guy who would play games with opposing players on the field and his personality earned him the nickname “Psycho.” But one of his most famous, or maybe infamous, moments came in a game against the Tigers. He bunted for a base hit and slid into first. He had dirt in his pants and pulled them down to clean up. But he didn’t realize what he was doing for a few seconds, clearly embarrassed.

After his career he worked as a broadcaster for Fox nationally but also for local broadcasts. He tended to make comments about people’s ethnic background and got himself in some hot water on many occasions.

The Score on Steve Lyons – 8.5

Steve is a great example of some of the things I like about signatures. First, he fills up the card and puts a really nice and big signature on there. I’ve also never known him to use a bad marker in the past. And lastly, the addition of a nickname as an inscription (or what I consider an inscription) really adds to it in a big way. This is a great return.

Thanks Mr. Lyons! I’m giving this return an 8.5.
