The Story of the Autograph
Steve Kemp is a former outfield in the major leagues. He played from 1977 to 1988 with the Tigers, White Sox, Yankees, Pirates, and Rangers.
Kemp went to USC and played under Hall of Fame head coach Rod Dedeaux. Kemp was part of the final two of five consecutive College World Series championships in 1973 and 1974. He played there with other future major leaguers Fred Lynn, Roy Smalley and Rich Dauer. The Tigers drafted him in with the first overall pick of the 1976 MLB Draft. After just one season in the minors he debuted on April 7, 1977.
He had some pretty good seasons in the majors and was a solid player overall. But his best season by far was 1979 when he put up a 4.5 WAR. He made his one and only All-Star team that year hitting .318 with 26 home runs and 105 RBU, all career highs.
He moved on to the White Sox in a trade for Chet Lemon and then the Yankees as a free agent. The Yankees would trade him a few years later with Tim Foli in exchange for Dale Berra, Jay Buhner and Alfonso Pulido. He closed out his career with the Padres and Rangers as a free agent.
The Score on Steve Kemp – 6.0
It almost feels like Steve’s signature has blanks on a couple of these. I think that’s mostly the way he writes his last name. It seems like the “K” isn’t really complete. I’m glad I got that 1979 card signed given that was his career year.
Thanks Mr. Kemp! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
