The Story of the Autograph

Pat Underwood is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He only played for the Detroit Tigers in his career that lasted from 1979 to 1983.

Underwood was born and raised in Kokomo, Indiana. He was drafted out of high school by the Tigers in the first round of the 1976 MLB Draft with the second overall pick. After a pretty good trip through the minors for three seasons, he made his major league debut on May 31, 1979.

That first appearance was significant in that his brother Tom started for the Blue Jays. Apparently Tom wasn’t a fan of it, but the Underwood brothers brought it and Pat made it to the ninth and the bullpen finished off a win while Tom took the complete game loss. Pat also pitched in the Disco Demolition Night game at Comiskey Park that same season.

He was up and down to the minors in his career. In mid 1983 he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds, then later that year he was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the Rule 5 Draft, and signed as a free agent by the Orioles after he was released by the Rangers before the 1984 season. But he never made another appearance in the major leagues after 1983.

Pat has a pretty interesting signature. First, the style looks almost as if he is drawing waves in parts of it. Then he puts his number sort of above his name (usually its below for most players) and it almost is included with his name. At first I actually thought it was the way he was writing his “oo”. And lastly, he included the years he played as a sort of inscription. He used a nice marker though and filled up the cards pretty well.

Thanks Mr. Underwood! I’m giving this return a 7.
