The Story of the Autograph

Jim Walewander is a former second baseman in the major leagues. He play parts of four seasons from 1987 to 1993 with the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, and California Angels.

Walewander is a native of Chicago, Illinois and went to Iowa State University and was drafted by the Tigers in the 9th round of the 1983 MLB Draft. He spent several years in the minors guys like Alan Trammel and Lou Whitaker handled the middle infield for the big ball club. He made his major league debut on May 31, 1987. He didn’t play too much for the Tigers but score the winning run to help them get to the post season in 1991, then wasn’t on the postseason roster.

He was an odd guy and became a bit of a fan favorite in his short time in Detroit. He started the Jimmy Walewander Fan Club, he was a Dead Milkmen fan (and they were in attendance when he hit his only MLB homer), and he even got a theme song from a fan called “The Jim Walewander Blues.”

He went on to played with the Yankees, then in Italy, and finally for the Angels before calling it quits after his last game in October of 1993.

I don’t know if Jim makes his own cards or what, but I love that he signs and sends them with requests. In my case he matched them to the cards I was requesting him to sign. But I know he has lots of versions of his cards and they are all in different styles. He does a good job autographing the card, but the customs are the best part.

Thanks Mr. Walewander! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
