The Story of the Autograph

Steve Foster is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1991 to 1993 and spent his entire career in the bigs with the Cincinnati Reds.

Foster is a Texas native. He played football, basketball and baseball in high school, earning All-State honors twice and helping his team to a state championship as a senior. He then went on to Binn College before transferring to Texas. As a Longhorn he earned Pitcher of the Year honors in 1988 in the Southland Conference. The Reds drafted him in the twelfth round of the 1988 MLB Draft. After a few years in their farm system he debuted on August 22, 1991.

He was mostly up and down to the minors during his time in the league. His most significant time spent in the majors was in 1992 when he played in 31 games and pitched 50 innings. When he played he didn’t play poorly. He had two seasons with an under 2 ERA and one with an under 3 ERA for a 2.41 career ERA. He went 3-3 in 59 appearance with one start and 89.2 total innings.

In 1993 he was Rob Dibbles set up man but started having arm trouble at the end of May that year. He appeared on the Jay Leno show, throwing baseballs at milk bottles and ended up in a month long trip to the injured list. It turned out he had detached cartilage in his right showlder and was out the rest of the season. Surgery never helped it and it ended his career.

After his playing days he’s coach in the pros and in college. Since 2021 he’s worked for the Rockies as their director of pitching.

The Score on Steve Foster – 7.0

Steve has a really fun signature. It came out pretty well on these, but it does look like there’s some rubbing that happened on a couple. And the marker almost looks like it was running out, but that could be partly due to the finish on these 1992 Topps card. One thing I find interesting, like other guys up and down to the minors… he has a different number on each card.

Thanks Mr. Foster! I’m giving this return a 7.
