The Story of the Autograph

Steve Cox is a former first baseman in the major leagues. He played from 1999 to 2002 and spent the whole of his career in the majors with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He also played in Japan with the Yokohama BayStars.

Cox was born and raised in California. He was drafted out of high school by the Oakland Athletics in the fifth round of the 1993 MLB Draft. While he was in the minors he was traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 1997 Expansion Draft with the 46th overall pick. He would first appear for the Rays two years later on September 19, 1999.

He only played in six games to end the 1999 season but in 2000 he would get a good shot. In 116 games he hit .283 with eleven homers and 35 RBI. He would increase his home run and RBI numbers over the next two seasons with 12 and 16 homers and 51 and 72 RBI, but his batting average would dip into the .250s.

At the end of 2002 the Yokohama BayStars purchased his contract. He would sign again with the Devil Rays a couple years later but was released early on in the 2005 season with his last major league game being at the end of 2002.

In more recent years he’s coached at Porterville College in California.

The Score on Steve Cox – 7.0

Steve has what kind of looks like a mess of a signature. But after than first glance you can see what he’s doing in there. I wish he would take more of an opportunity to use that “x”. How many people have that in their name to take advantage of. I really like that 2001 Fleer card the best. I’ve had a few of those signed this year and they always come out well.

Thanks Mr. Cox! I’m giving this return a 7.
