The Story of the Autograph

Steve Brye is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1970 to 1978 with the Minnesota Twins, Milwaukee Brewers, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Brye is a native of California. The Twins drafted him in the first round of the 1967 MLB Draft. After a few seasons in the minors he made his debut on September 3, 1970 at the age of 21. He played in just nine games that first season and then 28 games in his second. It was his third season that he got a chance at more time with 100 games.

His best season came when he got a chance to play a bunch more. In 1974 he played in a career high 135 games. That season he hit .a career high .283 with two homers and a career high 41 RBI. His two homers were well below other years where he had nine, seven and six. He moved on to the Brewers in 1977 and then on to the Pirates. He tried to make it back to the majors in 1979 with the Padres but decided to retire before getting back to the majors.

For the most part you can see that Brye signs sideways on the cards. I think he might be doing that to try to find the best place to sign. I’m thinking that because he signed the 1976 card a little differently. I think my favorite of these is the 1976 card, but that might because its one of my favorite designs.

Thanks Mr. Brye! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.

I wonder if Brye is signing that way because he was a teammate of Harmon Killebrew’s and Killebrew always used to talk about signing an autograph so it was legible (Killebrew’s signature on the card I have is like that).

I once wrote about how Steve Brye was the “favorite player” of a stuffed lion my brother had when we were kids. We made our stuffed animals talk and such. That led to an email from Brye’s sister or sister-in-law (I don’t remember) wanting more details, she thought it was quite amusing!

Oh man I never took my stuffed animal’s lives that far! But I know my kids did (maybe not for favorite baseball players, but other stuff). But I love those stories about people wanting more info about things you contact them about.
