The Story of the Autograph

Ryan Church played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball for seven years from 2004 through 2010. He’s best known as a Washington National where he spent 2004 through 2010 as they moved from Montreal to Washington, DC. After Washington he also spent time in New York (as a Met), Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and Arizona.

Church as originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 14th round of the 2000 MLB Draft after he attended the University of Nevada in Reno. The Indians traded him to the Expos in 2004 before he made an appearance in the majors in 2004. He made his major league debut later that year on August 21st. Unfortunately he struggled during that first time he had in the majors. After a rough start to the next year he turned it around and was batting .325 and having a great rookie season. Then he ran into the outfield wall in Pittsburgh in June and his season was the same after a couple trips to the disabled list derailed him a bit. After the 2007 season, probably his career best, Church was traded with Brian Schneider to the Mets for Lastings Milledge.

Church’s time with the Mets in 2008 was filled mostly with injuries, specifically concussions. He had two collisions that resulted in concussions and he spent time on the disabled list dealing with those. He was back by the end of the year and was the last recorded out in Shea Stadium in a 4-2 Mets loss on September 29th. The Mets traded him to the Braves in 2009 where he finished the season. Then after signing with Pittsburgh the next year he was traded again to the Diamondbacks where he finished his career.

Ryan definitely has an autograph that comes looks like a signature. I’ve mentioned that before and I know that sounds funny, but it’s the difference of how the look of signing a ball or a card looks to how you sign your taxes. Still, it’s a good size and you can read it as his name. I think I could probably find some better cards for him to sign though.

Thanks Mr. Church! I’m giving these a 7.
